First mentioned in 1822 in the Register of Alehouse Licences, thought to be an 18th century building and was originally part of the Whitbread Estate (you can still see the sign on one side!).
In 1927, at the time of its first rating valuation, and the valuer noted that it comprised a tap room and bar, bar parlour, coffee room, larder and kitchen downstairs with five Bedrooms (“two of these letting bedrooms”) and a bathroom upstairs. Outside were a henhouse, harness room and stable. They estimated it sold 2½ barrels of beer and a gallon spirits per week, noting: “Only licensed house in village”.
These days the stables have been converted into a gorgeous function space, hosting weddings and parties.
Interesting fact! There was once a model railway running through the gardens, you can still see the ticket office next to the pub and if you explore further, you can find embankments, tunnels and bridges too! That train now runs around the garden of one of our sister pubs The Fancott Arms, near Luton.
From the publican to our amazing chefs, our team are the beating heart of The White Horse.
Take the time to get to know the faces behind bar, the notepad, and kitchen door and spark a conversation the next time you visit us.
